SSC supply 10-ton commemorative Granite boulder to mount statue for Merville Barracks in Colchester
When 16 Air Assault Brigade was formed by merging 24 Airborne Brigade and 5th Airborne Brigade in 1999, there was some reluctance to drop the 5th Airborne’s Pegasus symbol in favour of the new striking eagle symbol. However, the change went ahead and after some fundraising the change was marked with the installation of a ‘striking eagle’ statue at the Merville Barracks in Colchester.
As part of Army 2020 restructuring, Pegasus was returned as the brigade’s symbol and a new Pegasus statue was raised to mark the transition. This left the existing ‘striking eagle’ statue without a home.
It was decided to mount the eagle on a large chunk of granite as a memorial to those who have given their lives to the brigade.
It was at this point SSC – Sandblast Sign Company were contacted to supply a stone to mount the statue. We used our network of suppliers to source a 10-ton chunk of Scottish granite to mount the ‘striking eagle’. Scottish Granite was used as a nod to the brigade’s Scottish history. The stone was carved by our skilled stonemasons into an appropriate shape and the front of the stone was sandblast engraved with the commemorative text. Once finished the engraved boulder was transported to site and the eagle statue securely mounted to the top.
Sandblast Sign Company was very proud to take on this project and delighted with the feedback from the client:
“I just wanted to drop you a quick note to thank for your hard work on the eagle and its new ‘perch’. The work you carried out was first class – well done. The Brigade held a formal dedication service today and they are absolutely delighted with the finished article.”
